Cloud Appreciation
Clouds have a massive impact on the atmosphere of many of my images. Whether they light cirrus clouds or thick cumulus, a cloudy day is always the perfect time for me to head out with the camera.
One of the trickiest parts of getting a cloud photograph is that often, clouds will emit a large variance of light. From deep dark greys of a storm cloud, the edges are often bright white, especially if the sun is shining behind the cloud. I always carry filters to minimise this.
I use a graduated neutral density filter. This helps expose the clouds well without overdoing the highlights. It will also help in situations with a bright sky and darker background. To bring out the fine detail within the clouds I also use a polarising filter. This will help with the contrast within the clouds.
